What Should You Look For Before Buying A Garage Door

When you are planning to buy a garage door for commercial purpose or for residential use, you need a new door opener. The task of choosing a door opener becomes quite tough and confusing owing to the options available in the market today. Automatic garage door openers Toronto is a great alternative but there are certain guidelines that a person should follow to make the right choices. Here are a few of them:

Type of Drive: Garage door openers come in three varieties-chain, screw and belt. Chain drive openers are one of the oldest styles and are very popular. They are good for value too. However, these drives are a little noisy and are not a good choice for garages below or adjacent to the bedroom. Screw drive openers are less expensive and have less noise. It is a midway drive. They are easiest to install and can be done by any amateur technician. Belt drive is similar to chain drive but they operate with a rubber belt. They cost more than others cost and is the quietest.

Power: The power at which the garage door functions is another important feature that you need to look for when you plan to buy one. For a standard two-car garage door, a ½-horsepower door opener is perfect. For smaller or light doors less power door is required. Similarly, heavy or large doors require more horsepower. If you are in doubt always select more power as there is not much difference in price when it comes to power.

Size of the door: Another deciding factor would be the size of the door. A standard garage door is about 7 feet tall and the standard garage door opener accommodates doors that are up to 6 inches taller. If doors are taller than this then an extension kit is required.

Safety Features: Always check for the safety features of the doors. Every garage door opener that has been manufactured after the year 1993 contains a safety mechanism that stops and reverses a closing door. The reverse mechanism saves damages caused by accidents to cars, pets, and people.

Battery Backup: Though not a standard feature, battery backup is available on some models. When the electrical power is knocked out from the door opener the backup power kicks in and allows the you to use the door opener. If this feature is not there you might find yourself locked out.

Also, keep a note of the wall control features and the warranty offered on the door openers to ensure that you get the best product at best price.
